A number of our Cubs and some Explorers attended Glasgow's very own Pinkston Watersports for a taster kayak session this week. This was run by the Clyde Scout Region who maintain a container with equipment and provide a team of volunteer instructors available to any Scout groups looking to book.
The weather conditions for our kayaking session this week were classic Glasgow. Looked warm but had a bitter Icey wind coming through. We were concerned initially we might have to cut the session short and were keeping an extra eye on those who were perhaps not dressed appropriately. (pssst remember and check the kit list and ALWAYS dress for the weather). Despite this we didn't have a single young person complain about the cold and everyone took to it like a duck to water.
After a quick safety brief on dry land, getting kitted up and some practice with the paddles everyone was launched onto the water and started flying around the basin like they'd done it a million times. Not a single person capsized or fell in and everyone managed to return safely with big smiles on their faces.
Kayaking is a great activity for Scouts, as it promotes physical activity, teamwork, and communication skills. It also allows them to experience the natural environment and learn about water safety. I hope this taster session has inspired some of the Scouts to continue kayaking and explore other water sports.
Pinkston is a fantastic facility located right in the heart of Glasgow.
One of the main aims of Scouting is to provide young people with #SkillsForLife and introduce them to sports and adventures they may not have access to elsewhere. With that said, we encourage our members to pursue any sports or hobbies they experience through Scouting, such as kayaking.
Kayaking has a much larger community in Glasgow than you may expect, with dozens of dedicated clubs and companies providing access to equipment and training.
Check out the links at the end of the page to get started. There are also several shops in and around Glasgow where you can purchase basic safety equipment or hire kayaks to try it out yourself.
Here are some useful links for local places where you can hire kayaking equipment, book adventures and training and meet other kayakers.
